Museum Firearm Accreditation
Conditions for accreditation, notably membership of a national museum association

  1. Accreditation as a Museum:
    This is strictly applicable to museums that posses firearms -- not deactivated firearms. 

  2. The respective application forms together with the under mentioned additional documentation must be hand delivered by the applicant to the relevant Designated Firearms Officer:

    (a)    The applicant must complete the relevant sections of the SAPS 519 (a) (Application for accreditation as an association) form.

    (b)   (i)     documentary proof that specify the display mechanisms that will be used to display the firearms.

     (ii)   documentary proof that specify the description of the access control to the museum where the firearms will be displayed.

     (iii)  a certificate confirming that the museum is open to the public.

    (c)    Written confirmation that:

    (i)    no firearm or ammunition will be supplied or transferred to any person who does not hold a temporary authorisation issued under section 21 of the Act, authorising the possession of the firearm, or a permit to possess the ammunition, as the case may be;

    (ii)    the firearm and ammunition will be displayed or stored under the control of the appointed curator of the museum or a person authorised thereto in writing by the curator;

     (iii)    the curator of the museum or a person authorised in writing thereto by the curator will ensure that any physical access to the firearm and ammunition other than provided for in paragraph 2(c)(ii) will be under his or her personal control and that all necessary steps will be taken to prevent the loss of the firearm and ammunition; and

    (iv)    the firearm and ammunition will only be used for the display and or storage by the museum on the registered premises of the museum.

    (d) A written confirmation that the museum has been rated and accredited by a national or provincial museum council and that it:

     (i)    is administered for purposes that include collecting, preserving, studying, interpreting, assembling and exhibiting to the public for its education and enjoyment, objects and specimens of educational and cultural value, including artistic, scientific, historical and technological materials;

     (ii)    is open to the public or demonstrate or displays for the public on a regular basis;

     (iii)    has a curator who is a member in good standing of a national or provincial museum association;

     (iv)    conforms to provincial and municipal or local government land use and zoning regulations; and

     (v)       maintains safety rules and regulations with regard to the safe storage and display of firearms that conform to the prescribed standards;

    (e)    Documentary proof of the manner in which the firearms and ammunition will be controlled in the museum.  (i.e. registers that will be utilised to control the firearms and ammunition.)

    (f)    A written undertaking that any change in the circumstances regarding the displaying or storage relevant to the firearms may not take place unless prior approval of the CFR has been obtained.

    (g)    A certified copy of the page of the identity document on which the photograph and particulars of the applicant appears. 

    (h)    A certified copy of the applicant's permanent residence permit in the case of a non SA Citizen.

    (i)    A certified copy of the identity document or passport of the directors and/or associates of the business.


    3.    Submit your application with R280-00 for registration.
