Background info: In recent years many new museums have opened in South Africa. This development has given rise to a critical need to distribute skills related to exhibition design as well as the creation of a platform to explore new media. This growth of the museum sector throws up further critical challenges to increase the levels of creative expression among museum designers as well as general technical sophistication in line with the ever-changing technology. Integral to these challenges are related skills in project management, teamwork, audience research, new communication media and diversity management.
Effective Exhibition design is a means through which museums communicate with their audiences. By using objects in meaningful and appropriate contexts exhibitions can enhance their edutainment level. Furthermore, for museums to achieve their objective a safe environment for both objects and audiences is a necessary prerequisite.
Finally, museum audiences in the post 1994 South African heritage landscape has both attracted a more diverse audience but still needs to address critical issues with regards to multilingualism, multiculturalism, the physical and intellectually challenged as well as taking into account the technical competency of the youth and the lack of technological exposure by many people especially those in rural areas. If these issues are not addressed in exhibition design, museums will be unable to grow their audiences and appeal to people who have never visited museums before.
