The museum sector as a career option.
The South African Museums Association (SAMA) is a voluntary professional body with the vision of providing leadership in the management of South Africa's diverse natural and cultural heritage for the enrichment of all people. SAMA offers individual membership; open for any individual who is interested in museums, as well as institutional membership open to museums, galleries, heritage sites and other related organisations.
SAMA’s vision for the museum sector can only be realised through the employment and retention of competent staff across the sector. It has however come to SAMA’s attention that perceptions exist that employment in the museum sector is not an attractive career option to graduates.
SAMA requested the University of Stellenbosch to investigate this perception through research at tertiary institutions. The results of this research will facilitate the development of interventions for the museum sector to make it a career of choice, thereby providing more satisfying long term career opportunities, and enabling a world-class museum sector in South Africa.
